Retro Chic

Overview
RetroChic, the soon-to-launch vintage club, that aspires to create buzz for the grand opening. It is the brainchild of a 2 member team, for a school assignment. I lead the overall visual design, such as branding, website and high fidelity app prototype. Additionally, I created the gamification system of the app prototype.

Branding
Our branding concept for the retro vinyl store is a vibrant fusion of nostalgia and futuristic flair, drawing inspiration from the aesthetics of pastel vaporwave. The 90’s were all about rebellion and freedom, and has now inspired the youth to be themselves more. The pastel colours signify a sense of calmness, welcoming people of all walks of life. Our logo is a perfect blend of both worlds.

Prototype
The prototype allowed us to make our vision come true. The low and high fidelity prototype, crafted with Adobe XD is a fully functional prototype of the ecommerce app. It incorporates distinctive features such as games and leaderboard strategically designed to captivate our intended demographic, the Achievers.

Website
The website has been meticulously designed to entice customers in anticipation of the grand opening. Our platform boasts unique features including timers, social sharing capabilities, and an interactive quiz. Furthermore, we’ve seamlessly integrated signup, login, and contact data with RestDB. In terms of design, we’ve gone above and beyond to captivate our audience, incorporating animations such as flying thunderbolts and typewriting effects.

HEVR

Overview
The Virtual Hawker Experience is an innovative VR app that immerses users in the vibrant world of hawker culture, showcasing a variety of culinary traditions from Singapore’s hawker centers. This educational game provides a fun introduction to iconic local dishes and unique hawker customs like ‘choping’ tables, encouraging players to discover and experience Singapore’s rich culinary scene firsthand. Hawker centers in Singapore represent the nation’s multicultural society through a diverse range of dishes. Newton Circle Food Centre, featured in “Crazy Rich Asians,” is a popular culinary destination showcasing Singaporean gastronomy and culture, attracting both locals and global visitors alike. I oversaw the development of database architecture, including authentication and the point system. Moreover, I designed and developed the bird swatting mini-game along with its assets.

Branding
Red and white colours were retained to symbolize Singapore’s flag but adjusted the red tone for better readability. Red is known to stimulate appetite and is commonly used in food-related logos. The addition of yellow in the background complements the red and evokes a cheerful and inviting mood, aligning with our goal of creating a fun and educational hawker experience. We modified the tagline to “savour traditions through VR” to clarify the purpose of HEVR and enhance understanding for our audience.

Game
The Virtual Hawker Experience (HEVR) offers an immersive journey into Singaporean hawker culture through interactive games and quizzes. Players begin with engaging in the “Chope Game” to simulate reserving a table using tissue packets, emphasizing the importance of table reservation in crowded hawker centers. Quiz Trivia educates players on hawker center etiquette, including payment methods, takeaway procedures, and local lingo, presented with engaging visual models. The Ordering Section allows players to practice ordering Cai Fan (Rice with Dishes) to familiarise themselves with Singaporean cuisine and ordering customs. In the Buying Drinks segment, players learn essential drink-ordering words and slang. “Myna Catch” challenges players to shoo away birds commonly found at hawker centers while earning points. Lastly, Tray Return teaches players proper tray disposal to avoid breaking the law when visiting hawker centers in Singapore. HEVR’s interactive features aim to educate and entertain, encouraging players to explore and appreciate Singapore’s rich hawker culture.

Botanics Garden AR

Overview
Botanic Gardens AR is a mobile AR game centered around the Botanic Gardens in Singapore. Our goal is to provide an educational and distinctive experience by teaching users about the gardens’ flora, fauna, and history. The game incorporates various interactions, including tapping on plants within a virtual 3D map to reveal clues, navigating through hedge mazes, and learning about environmental conservation practices to ensure a clean and safe environment for all. Completing these interactions unlocks secret areas within the game, adding to the immersive and educational aspects of the experience. I led the development of the Recycling game, which utilized finger distance measurements on the screen to accurately simulate the physics of throwing objects.

Branding
Botanic Gardens was selected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its role in conserving thousands of endangered plants. Our goal is to showcase Singapore’s identity as a garden city to visitors and locals alike. The chosen color scheme and fonts are dyslexia- and colorblind-friendly, ensuring accessibility for all players.

Game
Players start by registering or logging in, leading them to the main menu where they can begin playing the game, adjust audio settings, participate in a picture competition, visit the website, or log out. The game is set in Botanic Gardens, where players explore different areas by scanning image targets. They unlock the greenhouse after completing all four areas. Each area offers interactive experiences: Fusion involves assembling parts for a gazebo, Maze requires navigating mazes within a time limit, Collect educates players on cleanliness through trash collection, and Recycle teaches recycling by sorting items into the correct bins. The quiz tests knowledge by dragging sticks to correct models, and other activities include scaling an island and toggling music. Completing all activities unlocks additional game features and rewards.

Booth
The booth aims to create a park-like atmosphere by incorporating forest backdrops and miniature sculptures of trees to enhance immersion and emphasize nature. It prioritizes providing guests with an unobstructed space to freely interact with AR image targets. The keywords guiding the design are immersive, green, nature, safe, and unobstructed. Additionally, the team plans to distribute promotional pamphlets that double as compilations of image targets for the game. Guests can use these pamphlets to play the game and then take them home for continued play. The pamphlet holders will be on-theme to enhance memorability and showcase the creative approach of the project.
